Faith Tabernacle Church History

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1

Today we are celebrating 46 years of giving thanks unto the Lord for the great things he has done for Faith Tabernacle.  1 Thessalonians 5:18 admonishes us to "in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

Our Humble beginning was at 805 El Paso Street under the direction of the late Elder Willie D. Fuller.

Elder Napoleon R. Burton was a minister at the time that the late Elder Fuller felt a calling from the Lord to return to Louisiana.  Elder Burton, being led of the Lord, took over as Pastor of Faith Tabernacle.  With God's help, the church began to flourish.  The Lord added to the church as he saw fit.

We tried countless times to purchase the existing property at 805 El Paso Street, but were unsuccessful; however, "we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose."  A dance studio bought the building, and we had to vacate.  In September of 1981, the church moved to 6281 Cleveland into the home of Elder and Sister Burton.  We had church services right there in their den.  Matthew 18:20 says, "for where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."  Sometimes we had to shout around chairs, but God received the glory.

Our Pastor and congregation were seeking the Lord for a church building as Matthew 7:8 says, "For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."  The Lord opened a door when we met with Max Weber Real Estates and signed a 15-year contract to purchase a building at 3927 Bliss on February 25, 1982.  One day Elder Burton prayed about our financial situations.  While at work, he consulted a long-time friend and brother in the Lord, Scottie MacKinnon, who told him his prayers had been answered.  Mr. and Mrs. Scottie and Lorna MacKinnon agreed to loan us the $27,000 at a lower interest rate, which reduced our loan term to 7 years.  The members of Faith Tabernacle thank God for Scottie and Lorna MacKinnon, for they have been a tremendous blessing to us.

We decided, as a church, to become a corporation.  We were unsuccessful because the name Faith Tabernacle was already being used. After consulting with the late Margie Lawson, we decided to use the name Faith Alive.  The application was resubmitted and approved...Praise God!  Faith Alive became a corporation on March 16, 1983.

In November, a church note that should have taken seven years to pay was paid off in 5 years.  The Lord blessed, and now we "owe no man".  The mortgage for the sanctuary was paid in full.

After much prayer and fasting Elder Burton turned the church over to Elder Anthony Flowers, who became Pastor of Faith Tabernacle with Elder Burton acting as overseer.

The church continued to grow and prosper. Elder Flowers turned the church back over to Elder Burton and began to work in another portion of the vineyard with his wife and family.

1999 - 2000

The Lord sent many people to Faith Tabernacle over the years to help in the work and continues to bless with help to this day.  His darling wife Evangelist Hazel Burton continues work in the church as the Mother of the Church.

2000 - 2010

Pastor Napoleon Burton, led by the Holy Spirit continued to oversee the growth of the church and attend to the needs of the flock.  On September 15, 2010, The Lord saw fit to call him home to his reward.

(Acts 20:28 says, "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.")

2011 - Present

Genesis 22:13, tells us that God always has a "Ram in the Bush", and so was His blessings upon Faith Tabernacle.  Our new Pastor, Reverend Roshun Burton, the youngest son of the Late Pastor Napoleon Burton was sent to us, and he received his chare, and was installed by Bishop Anthony Flowers on December 4th, 2011.  Under the leadership of Pastor Roshun Burton, the church has continued to grow spiritually and additions have been made to the physical structure: New sanctuary chairs, new pulpit furniture, and newly remodeled kitchen.  Additionally, we're blessed to pave the parking lot and erect a security fence.  Pastor Burton has instilled that we are Children of God regardless of how mankind views us.

Church Motto:

"I am Unique in my Design;

I cannot be Re-Created, I cannot be Duplicated."

"I am who God says I am;

So therefore, Love me for Who I am."
